The Jabalina Olympic Games are officially open with the fifth volume in the “Teoría y Práctica Melódica” Series, titled "Juegos Olímpicos". This compilation is full of Olympic spirit and will feature 23 artists, some from our roster and some special guests, some Spanish and some foreign (Pinkie –UK-, heirs to the best British pop of the 90s and the sound of Sarah Records and Soulavki –Chile- one of the greatest exponents of Andean indietronica, with a touch of 60s flavour), with 16 unreleased songs, and 7 especially hand-picked songs, featuring a total 79:03 minutes of music on one CD. All the Jabalina roster takes part (Souvenir, J'aime, Montevideo, Polar, Nadadora, Uke, AMA and Apenino), plus special guests like Francisco Nixon, Flow, La Costa Brava, La Estrella de David, Pumuky, Travolta or Prin Lalá. This fifth volume consolidates our series as one of the most prestigious of the Spanish indie scene. And a junior team full of promising athletes like the alluring Olivia de Happyland, one of the most promising acts of the new Spanish pop-folk scene, Nebulosa (which might be the ultimate alias of Charlie Mysterio), who again oozes the best essence of the 80s songwriters, Llum (the solo project of Jesús Sáez, from Polar), slowly reaching maturity and the appreciation he deserves, eclectic DJ Aldo Linares, who croons his way to become the ‘Elvis of Arequipa’, Colorado (the solo project of Modesto, from Zipi Zape) or Linda Guilala, heirs to the energy pop of Juniper Moon. All in all, a 5th Volume to be proud of, and which establishes the series as the most prestigious of the Spanish indie scene.

MONTEVIDEO’s second album comprises ten new punchy songs. A collection of memorable and infectious pop songs which are both musically intense and lyrically deep – this has opened up the band’s range and repertoire not just instrumentally (guitars and backing tracks), but also in the composition and arrangements. The previous records had hinted some references and influences that have suddenly bloomed in this one: 80’s techno-pop or 60’s psychedelia give the new songs a colourful atmosphere that lasts for the whole 37 minutes, while retaining at the same time the elegance and sensitivity that Manu and Damiana (with Saúl on guitar) have always displayed in their interplaying boy/girl singing. New issues and sonic textures are approached in the lyrics and arrangements (“Las cosas son así” o “Una ciudad feliz”) while retaining at the same time the brilliance of a well-crafted repertoire.

After almost a two-year absence, COLA JET SET come back in 2007 with an EP starring "Suena el teléfono" (The Telephone Rings), a disco-funk floorshaker followed by their rendition of THE SEEKERS standard "Georgy Girl", their own country-pop "Una palabra tuya" (Just One Word) and the Telephone Megamix "Suena y requetesuena" (Rings Again and Again). First COLA JET SET album, a collection of 12 classic guitar'n'drum pop rubies. Superbly produced by Guille Milkyway (LA CASA AZUL), main singer here in "Nuba". Born of some ashes of LOS FRESONES REBELDES (Spanish one hit wonders in 1997) they finally top their Pop Crusade with a solid and mature recording. COLA JET SET are a melting pot of the "B sound": BEATLES, BEACH BOYS, BIRDS, Brill Building, Brigitte Bardot, BLONDIE, you name it! Then add a little Soul touch Southern and Northern, and play all this with that New Wave fresh approach. It was originally intended to be a single featuring the song “si tu sais pas” (an irresistible techno-pop song that SOUVENIR wrote and recorded after the release of “64”), but it has gradually grown into the CD-Single “Extras 64”, which features two new songs (“si tu sais pas” and a cover version of BLONDIE’s “hanging on the telephone”), their brand new video for the song “Allô, allô” and three brilliant remixes which take songs from “64” deeper into the dancefloor. SOUVENIR have selected two of their favourite artists for the remixes: Swedish wunderkind Johan Agebjörn (of Sally Shapiro fame) has remixed “Allô, allô” in an elegant eurobeat style and Spanish idiosyncratic singer Miqui Puig has revamped “Une semaine en ballon”. And our own Jaime Cristóbal has done a bombastic remix of “Accident à Londres”.

Uke’s new record is like a tiny music box and immerse us straight into a world of fantasy. It transforms our surroundings into a childlike world, just like the toy instruments they have used to produce these 10 new songs. But of course childlike doesn’t mean childish, and the record depicts, in fact, a different way to see reality and a brand new take on naïve music. Infantile melodies which come covered with a veil of mystery, and in some cases become obsessive and enigmatic, like in a dream. Uke’s wonderful unorthodoxy is evident in the record, with saxes, drums, toy accordions, samples of films, recitations, torn newspapers, drink cans and tea mugs used as elements of the music, which also features more traditional elements like electric guitar and bass. We are convinced that this collection of musical pieces, with a prevalence of instrumental songs over vocals, will appeal to almost every taste, like a placid surrealistic trip along a path crammed with magic and dreams, which links Uke with the likes of Pascal Comelade, Klimperei, Vincent Gallo, Don Nino, Mi and l’Au or his contemporary Amiina, and their comforting musical universe.

Born and raised in Liverpool and carrying on the the Liverpudlian tradition of great pop music is Little Name, whose first album, "How To Swim And Live" is out now on Sleepy Records. Bringing the lush sounds of Camera Obscura and Belle and Sebastian, the northern sensibilities of The Smiths, and the pop of Bacharach, you would think that this already internationally recognized artist was a not-so-little band, with multiple members and a full orchestra section. However, the brilliant sounds on this CD are the work of just one man, Lee Barker. Underneath the bright indie pop are lyrics which explore ideas of openness and vulnerability, isolation and joy with a wit and humour belying their meaning. After 8 years of isolation through panic attacks, Lee was searching for greater themes, songs that said something, and said something about his life. "How To Swim And Live" was the answer. Themes of unrequited love, lost lives, anxiety, and finding inclusion in life. These are songs to cherish, songs that let you know that someone out there is feeling and struggling with the same things you are.

As in previous efforts, “Un rayo de sol” was recorded at home and in Arturo Vaquero’s Abrigueiro studio, and the result is a really special record which becomes almost indispensable at first listen. The songs lead us into a mysterious world, close but inaccesible. In a way, it’s a magical dimension of reality that we can only thoroughly share with the author while the music is playing: electro-acoustic pop (lead mainly by ukuleles and mandolin), woven on a subtle electronic base that incorporates a wide range of arrangements, from the most modest noise to the most spectacular strings section. Some clues for first-comers: Apenino’s sound might be associated to artists such as Múm, East River Pipe, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Khonnor, Patrick Wolf or even Ana D (voice in "El balneario"), to name but a (very idiosyncratic) few. “Un rayo de sol” (“A ray of the Sun”) illuminates all his previous work and does Marco A. Maril (former Dar Ful Ful and factotum of Apenino) justice in the form of 10 brand new songs which come off with an explosive palette of sounds that even the conclusive final track (“Ceremonia de clausura”) can barely contain.

Nadadora’s second album is bound to establish them as one of the most important bands in the Spanish independent scene. In their new album Nadadora have managed to refine their style - the songs sound more sparkling and the emotions are more intensely transmitted. The solid foundation of the guitars is still present, as are the breathtaking beat changes which have made this band so singular. Among all this we find melancholy and tranquil moments in which Sara and Gonzalo’s vocals duet masterfully. The result is a record with sharpness and balance, two characteristics which give the listener a broader perception of Gonzalo Abalo’s new compositions and a better understanding of the band’s spirit. Variety is one of the staples of this record, and the band show their improving skills in songwriting, as they move further away from the formula of previous installments: instead of the usual bunch of hit-singles that made up the backbone of their past records, on “Hablaremos de miedo” we do find them too but we also are presented with grower songs were recorded at the galician Circulo Polar studio, and were mastered in New York (West West Side Music) by Alan Douches.

“64” is the fourth record in Souvenir's career. In a brilliant stylistic twist the band has recorded ten new dance-oriented songs. Souvenir have been renowned by their wide variety of musical tastes, so this new direction should not surprise the connaisseurs. As ever, the stylish combination of different elements and influences guarantees an exciting result. Thus, in '64' techno-pop, new wave and 80s dance music have been weaved into a unique tapestry of backing tracks that collide with the elements which have typified the band's sound all these years: Patricia's mellow voice and Jaime's reverb-drenched, surf guitars. “64” is also Souvenir’s return to pop, as it features their most catchy, immediate tunes in years, in the tradition of The Human League, Blondie, Etienne Daho, Visage, Pet Shop Boys or Mylène Farmer, but also with a more contemporary resonance that links the band to artists like Ladytron, The Raveonettes, Vive la Fête, or Saint Etienne. The result is ten floor-fillers with great melodies in the French pop canon but dressed with the best of synth-pop fabrics.

"A Renewed Interest In Happiness" is THE FRANK AND WALTERS fifth studio album. Released on the anniversary of their 15th year in music, it encapsulates all that we have come to expect and admire from them. It is probably their finest work.
When they needed a gritty location to suit the mood of the songs "Fight" and "Country Boy", Wheatfield prison offered their services. In fact Paul did the vocal takes in a confined room full of inmates. In an interview they mentioned that they wanted to record in a church. Offers flooded in. "Keep the Faith" and "Hold On" were cut in an old Church Of Ireland building in Carrig Na Bhearr, Cork City.

This new album is an antidote to the trials and tribulations we all face. Questions and answers beautifully packaged in unforgettably perfect melodies.

The fourth Polar album is able to capture the intensity, the immediacy and the dimension that their guitars reach in their concerts. Almost without 'overdubs', recorded in three days and a half, "Surrounded by happiness" stood by the work at the desk of Matthew Barnhart. This is why "Surrounded by happiness" sound more direct, pure, and resuming, addictive, where Polar offer more and more faces. And there is the winner ace trio that is "Tell me", "Martin Eden" and "Stuart", a real declaration of intentions starting the record like that. Or, on the other hand, the non less impressive, formed by "A way to forget", "1988" and "Pere i Laia", where the lilting guitars seem to crystalize in any moment. In any case they're still Polar (and if you let me say it, more than ever) with their unmistakable game of guitars, with the careness of the sound, with the maximum control over musical parameters like dynamics, tension, velocity...

The fourth volume of our “Teoría y Práctica Melódica” series it is dedicated to the most special of topics: Christmas. It features, as usual, most part of the Jabalina roster of artists plus many guests, all of them Spanish, this time. The result compiles much more than just 18 unreleased songs about Christmas: combine Souvenir’s stark-naked gentleness, Astrud’s crude vision, and the meticulous musings of Apenino, Parade or Ama. Or the festive atmosphere of La Casa Azul and La Monja Enana, as opposed to Nadadora and Mirafiori’s introspection. Or the vocal brilliance of Corazón, Color Caramelo de Ron and Underwater Tea Party contrasting with Uke, Raro & Apenino’s ethereal instrumentality. Montevideo, Aldo Linares and Humanoid contribute their delicate electronica while Polar’s buzzing and J’aime acoustic approach bring the record to a spectacular close. To sum up, "Cuentos de Navidad" it’s a treat full of surprises where the listener can find two interesting cover versions (Yoko Ono’s “Listen, the snow is falling” which Nadadora sing in Galician with a Galaxie 500 touch, or José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad” which La Casa Azul have transformed into this Christmas’ dancefloor hit with a distinctive Boney M flavour) and much more...

After the release of the much needed "Souvenirs" -their compilation of rarities, outtakes and B-sides-, and whilst they pave the way for the release of "Renewed interest in happiness", new studio album due by the end of 2006, THE FRANK AND WALTERS finally release a proper Best Of. And they do it to coincide with their Spanish tour (dates already confirmed in Madrid, León and Santa Pola), where they will perform all their hits: a dream come true for their many fans in Spain.
